突然ですが、TOEFLライティング・スピーキングにおいて最も多くの人が苦労するポイントは何でしょう?
「話の構成」でしょうか? それとも「文法的な正確さ」でしょうか?
どちらの点も苦労しないといったら嘘になるでしょう。ですが、個人的には最も苦労した(している人も多い)と思う点は・・・「語彙力(表現力)」です!!!
普段から人は、自分の考えを考えを相手に伝える為に、手を変え品を変え例を変え・・・自分の主張を分かりやすく伝える為に何度も「繰り返し」を行います。
しかし、そんな必死の思いも、ちょっとした角度や視点の違いで全く違った印象になってしまいます。
何かを伝えたければ、その対象を複数の角度/視点(perspective)で捉えることが重要です。
本当に好きな人に、あなたの思いを伝えるために、”I LOVE YOU”ばかり言っていたら、しつこい奴だと思われるかもしれません。これは極端な例としても、TOEFL Writingもそれと同じで、同じ単語ばかりを使って自分の主張を伝えるのは美しくありません。
元々、英文を書く上で「同じ単語ばかりを繰り返し使用すること(repetition)は、冗長(redundant)である」とされ好まれません。
また、Independent WRITINGで満点レベルの内容に求められる要素にTOEFL iBTの運営元のETSは、
“demonstrating syntactic variety,appropriate word choice and idiomaticity, though it may have minor lexical or grammatical errors”
と適切な言葉の使い方を求めています。
要は、「場面に合った単語をいろいろな表現で書いてね」って事なんです。
